'Shabby Chic' was first coined in the 1980s during a period of design which focussed on paint and paint finishes. It describes furniture which is made to show signs of age-related wear and tear by deliberately distressing the piece. The style reflects the type of décor found in large country houses and French cottages. Recycling old furniture and fabrics is an important aspect of the style and was especially popular with Bohemians and artisans.
